The Someone Project: The Kimmela Center worked with Farm Sanctuary to compile and publish scientific evidence for cognitive and emotional complexity in farmed animals.

The Los Angeles Zoo Elephant Case: Dr. Marino served as an expert witness in the lawsuit that sought to retire the elephant Billy to a sanctuary.

The Nonhuman Rights Project: The Kimmela Center provided the scientific expertise, data and guidance for four court cases on behalf of captive chimpanzees litigated in late 2013 and currently under appeal.

“I Am Not an Animal!”: The Kimmela Center’s ground-breaking paper “I Am NOT an Animal!” Denial of Death and the Relationship Between Humans and Other Animals” was published in the journal Anthrozoos and is updated as a white paper. The paper argues that the denial of death, as propounded in Terror Management Theory, is an important factor in driving how and why our relationships with other animals are fundamentally exploitive and harmful.
